5 ways to make new friends

When you move abroad, making new friends is so important! Here are some of our ideas on where to find people to connect with.

In the cookie of life, friends are the chocolate chips.”

1. Work

A lot of teachers working abroad find their colleagues to be the easiest and best way to make new friends as you see them everyday and it becomes easy to then suggest going for dinner or a drink after you finish work.

2. Local spots

Find local socializing spots whether that be a café, bar or restaurant near where you live or work, and become a ‘regular’. You’ll soon start seeing the same faces each time you visit and have the opportunity to start a conversation.

3. New hobbies

One of the easiest ways is to sign up for a new hobby, it could be sports or a language course or anything else you may have an interest in. As long as it’s in a group format you’ll soon find yourself a group of potential friends.

4. 'Meetup'

The app ‘Meetup’ is a great way to find out local events/gathers in your area that could be of interest to you. The apps purpose is to bring like-minded people together, so this could be a great place to start, a lot of expats use this app.

5. Join a gym

Join a gym! If you become a regular visitor you’ll soon recognize people and eventually be able to chat to some of the other regular goers!
